about me

Hey there! I'm Bev Mitchell and I'm the mama in east village mama.  I'm raising two little boys, ages 4 and 7, in New York City's East Village.  After leaving a fifteen year career in the arts and higher education, I recently finished nursing school and am searching for work as an RN.  It's proving harder than you might think.  I'm also a friend, daughter, sister, mover, maker, cleaner, writer, dreamer, runner, schleper, napper, eater, sorter, and texter (not a Tweeter!).  I like my gin with tonic, my burgers with bacon, my jeans with Chucks, and my Hall with Oates.  But I'm just one of many mamas in my little corner of the world and, while I hardly think myself the teller of all those other mamas' stories, I hope mine is in some small way representative of the work we all do to take care of our kiddos, our families, and ourselves.

I write to keep my many loved ones, near and far, updated on our life and our antics, but I also write as a means of processing my own thoughts on living/loving/parenting in this crazy neighborhood/city/world.  With a background as a theater maker I am naturally a storyteller.  I decided to make the transition to nursing after a series of events in my own life made me passionate to understand what happens to personal narrative when it intersects with healthcare and/or a personal health crisis.  I like to share stories about the patients I care for and the institutions I train in.  In doing so I am diligent in my efforts to always protect the privacy of those patients.

In between posts about school I find plenty to muse on as I chase children, subways, and my calendar, fueled by coffee, great friends, and the energy of a city I desperately love.

I'm glad you popped in.  You can email me at eastvillagemama[at]gmail[dot]com.
